Finally, success on Hadoop

After days of fighting with the system (due to lack of even basic Linux knowledge), I finally managed to configure Hadoop on a single node and ran the Word Count example which ships along with the software itself. It felt good to see a working example. The results were good.
I hope that this acts as a stepping stone for my further work on hadoop and in my overall research attempt. Must thank Michael Noll for his tutorial at http://www.michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-single-node-cluster/ for the help.
My next step is going to be setting up a multi-node cluster.

Michael Noll has written an amazing tutorial on installing Hadoop on a single node. The tutorial is titled "Running Hadoop On Ubuntu Linux (Single-Node Cluster)".
It covers every aspect in pretty much detail.

The only point not covered and where I got stuck is when ssh would not start off. Finally, I discovered that there was no SSH server installed. This command

sudo aptitude install openssh-server

got the SSH server installed and lo, everything went on well then.

No more Sun Java on Ubuntu 10.04

Sun Java packages have been dropped from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from the Multiverse section of Ubuntu archive. Ubuntu team is encouraging users to use OpenJDK instead of Sun JDK/JRE but still if you want to install Sun JDK on your Ubuntu then here is the solution for the same.

perform the following four steps to install the package.
1. Add the Canonical Partner Repository to your apt repositories:

$ sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner"

2. Update the source list

$ sudo apt-get update

3. Install sun-java6-jdk

$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk

4. Select Sun’s Java as the default on your machine.

$ sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun

The full JDK which will be placed in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun (well, this directory is actually a symlink on Ubuntu).

After installation, make a quick check whether Sun’s JDK is correctly set up:

The best part is, if you have a machine with windows, its a very easy task to install Ubuntu.
Visit http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer for the Windows Installer of Ubuntu. Install this and lo and behold, once your machine restarts, you already have dual booting enabled and you can just click ahead to access your linux installation.

Using Soccer to Supplant Kerosene Use?

In many developing countries, heavy reliance on kerosene lamps has led to myriad health problems. The World Bank, for example, estimates that breathing the fumes created from burning kerosene indoors equals the harmful effects of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.
Burning kerosene for lighting also generates some 190 million metric tons a year of carbon dioxide emissions, according to recent estimates — the equivalent emissions of about 38 million automobiles.
But four Harvard students are betting that the popularity of soccer around the globe can help reduce the use of kerosene.
They came up with the idea for the sOccket, a soccer ball that generates and stores electricity during normal game play. The stored electricity in the ball can then be used to light an LED lamp, or charge a cellphone or battery.

“Soccer is something you will find in every African country,” one founder, Jessica Lin, told Green Inc. “People play for hours a day, so we thought, ‘Why not try to get a little more out of that energy?’ and that’s where the idea ultimately came from.”
Ms. Lin and her fellow students — Jessica Matthews, Julia Silverman and Hemali Thakkar — came up with the idea of an energy-harvesting soccer ball as a class assignment. The initial inspiration, they said, came from dance floors that can capture energy from the dancers’ movements.
They are working with a prototyping team and a technical adviser associated with the Laboratory at Harvard, a new idea incubator at the university. The group has also received a handful of grants, including support from the Clinton Global Initiative University.
Early prototypes of the ball use an inductive coil mechanism similar to the technology found in shake-to-charge flashlights. The movement of the ball forces a magnet through a metal coil that “induces” voltage in the coil to generate electricity. For each 15 minutes of play, the ball can store enough energy to illuminate a small LED light for three hours, according to initial trials.

The group recently tested the ball in South Africa, to gauge the children’s interest and to assess the ball’s performance during play. “Obviously, this won’t be a regulation ball,” Ms Lin said. “You won’t see David Beckham using it. But it’s a big improvement over some of the makeshift balls the kids create from things like old plastic bags.”

Using a “buy one-give one” model, the sOccket team hopes to sell the ball in Western markets, as a high-end tech gadget, then use the profits to distribute the balls at little or no cost in poor countries through development organizations like Whizz Kids United.
Their goal is to have a completed version of sOccket that can be distributed by the end of 2010.
“We’ve received some comments about how this ball isn’t going to solve the energy problems of the developing world. And, of course, we realize that,” Ms. Lin said. “We are trying to make a bigger statement about energy needs. Even if our project just starts people thinking about different ways to bring energy access to places like Africa, that’s really important.”

How to preview an entire book from google books

Quite often, you would have seen the annoying message "pages 3-4 are not part of this book preview" while browsing books on google books. I have a simple workaround to keep reading a google book continuously even though it is available only for a limited preview.
The solution is to open the book in Browser 1 like IE and start reading. After a few minutes, open the same book in another browser like Firefox or Opera. Each will be treated as a different session/user. So if page 3-4 is unavailable in browser 1, it is likely to be available in browser 2. So just keep switching between the two browsers and you will end up reading the whole book.

Today we are excited to announce the launch of a mobile version of Google Book Search, opening up over 1.5 million mobile public domain books in the US (and over half a million outside the US) for you to browse while buying your postage.

While these books were already available on Google Book Search, these new mobile editions are optimized to be read on a small screen. To try it out and start reading, open up your web browser in your iphone or Android phone and go to http://books.google.com/m

There's an interesting backstory about the work involved to prepare so many books for mobile devices. If you use Google Book Search, you'll notice that our previews are composed of page images made by digitizing physical copies of books. These page images work well when viewed from a computer, but prove unwieldy when viewed on a phone's small screen.
Our solution to make these books accessible is to extract the text from the page images so it can flow on your mobile browser just like any other web page. This extraction process is known as Optical Character Recognition (or OCR for short).The extraction of text from page images is a difficult engineering task. Smudges on the physical books' pages, fancy fonts, old fonts, torn pages, etc. can all lead to errors in the extracted text.

Imperfect OCR is only the first challenge in the ultimate goal of moving from collections of page images to extracted-text based books. Our computer algorithms also have to automatically determine the structure of the book (what are the headers and footers, where images are placed, whether text is verse or prose, and so forth). Getting this right allows us to render the book in a way that follows the format of the original book.
The technical challenges are daunting, but we'll continue to make enhancements to our OCR and book structure extraction technologies. With this launch, we believe that we've taken an important step toward more universal access to books.

5 Tools to Download any Book from Google and save it as PDF

Google Book Search is a tool from Google that searches the full text of books that Google scans, converts to text using optical character recognition, and stores in its digital database. Many popular books are available with Google Book. The books available can be read online only and cannot be downloaded for later use. You can download certain books as pdf that allows public-domain works and are free from copyright protection. Only few books are available with full preview based on agreements with publishers.

Following are different tools using which you can download any Google book and save it as PDF file or print it.

1) Google Books Downloader

Google Book Downloader is a tool that allows you to save book as PDF from google to your computer. Before using this tool make sure you have properly installed Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 SP1(Install)
How to use Google Books Downloader?
1.Download Google Books Downloader. Extract or unzip the file. Double click mdgb.exe to run the application.
2.Paste the URL of the book you want to download.
3.Press “Check” button. Book will be checked and all available pages will be retrieved.
4.Press “Download entire book” button to download all the pages in one go.
5.Press “Save entire book as…” button. All downloaded pages will be saved in PDF format.

2) Leechvideo
Visit leechvideo and input URL of the book you searched from Google. Input the URL for the book you want to download and press the ‘Grab’ button. The page retrieval process in the form of image files will start as soon as you press the ‘Grab’ button. Click right mouse button on the links and save it manually one by one. You can use Orbit for batch downloading

3) Greasemonkey script
This is the most powerful and stable way to download Google Book. You can easily download any book from books.google.com using Greasemonkey script. Just follow the simple steps below.

1.This hack only works with firefox browser. Make sure you install firefox browser.

2.Now install Greasemonkey Script and then install Google book downloader userscript.

3.Install Flashgot to firefox browser and restart your firefox browser.

4.Search any book on books.google.com and you’ll notice a download button at the sidebar as shown in screenshot.

5.Click the download button to download the images of each. Select the pages you wish to download and then right click and select FlashGot Selection to download the selected pages.
4) Laneware.net

Visit laneware. The tool works only on IE browser. Input the URL of the book you wish to download and you will get the links of the pages retrieved. I tried the tool but did not found much success. You can use its ‘FAQ and Help’ section for troubleshooting tips.

5) ClickBook
If you are looking for advance tool that can download google book and can print them for you as well then ClickBook is the best solution for you. The tool does not come free and is available for $49.95. Works only with Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista. Visit ClickBook for more details.

6) Download book without using any Tool

1. Open computer with admin privileges and launch your Internet Explorer (Not Firefox). Now visit to the page in books.google.com that you want to download.

2. Navigate to “C:\Documents and Settings\%admin_name%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\” of your computer machine and delete all of the content of the folder.

3. Browse the pages of the books that you want to download.

4. Open “Temporary Internet Files” folder. Copy all PNG files. These files are nothing but the pages of the scanned book

5. You can print the png files and arrange them in order for reading.

A Primer on fixed wireless broadband

Fixed wireless technology - in either point-to-point or point-to-multipoint applications - can support a variety of services, including voice data and video, as well as deployments at indoor and outdoor locations.
Those deployments can support a wide array of applications, including some quick wins we explored previously in areas such as government, transportation/traffic management, education and more.

Lets gain the know-how to successfully deploy fixed wireless broadband technology.

First glance at Fixed Wireless

At the most basic level, fixed wireless broadband is a type of high-speed network that uses radio signals rather than physical cables to deliver broadband service. Operators use fixed wireless to serve both residential and business customers, depending on their requirements. Fixed wireless is often used in areas where wireline coverage is either difficult or uneconomical to deploy.

The network equipment required to deploy fixed wireless is fairly straightforward as well: fixed ground stations or transmission towers that serve as the core of the network and transceivers installed at customer sites to communicate with the core network. Such links have traditionally required line-of-sight access – ie, no obstructions between them – to work most effectively, but technology improvements mean that today’s fixed networks can support no-line-of-sight as well. Today’s fixed wireless networks support high-bandwidth, low-latency transmission, meaning that the networks cannot only support “bursty” Internet access but more real-time data applications as well, including online gaming or voice over IP service.

In sum, fixed wireless broadband systems typically offer a number of advantages over wireline deployments, including simple network design and infrastructure, enabling rapid deployment (and tear-down, if necessary) and limited infrastructure, which makes it easier to deploy in hard-to-reach areas, such as urban environments or remote areas with inhospitable terrain.

Choosing the Architecture

Fixed wireless broadband deployments come in a variety of flavors to support different solution requirements. The three most common approaches are point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and mesh

Point-to-Point – If you are looking to replace a single leased line network – such as for transmitting traffic between two enterprise locations or backhauling for a cell tower location – a point-to-point architecture is the right approach. A point-to-point topology, thanks to its simplicity, offers the highest throughput over the longest distances. But connect more than a few sites in a point-to-point fashion and costs quickly rise and the individual links become more complex to manage.

Point-to-Multipoint – If point-to-point won’t work for you, consider deploying the network in point-to-multipoint topology. Such networks connect multiple sites from a central location using an omnidirectional antenna that sends a signal out equally to all end points on the network. You make a bit of a sacrifice in distance, in particular, but gain cost savings and decrease complexity when connecting multiple sites.

Mesh – Another approach is to deploy a mesh network, in which every radio can transmit signals to every other radio on the network. The benefit of such an approach is improved reliability and coverage; the downside is increased cost – at times for less throughput performance – versus less complex point-to-point approaches.

The War Between Mediafire and Rapidshare

Have you ever heard of Mediafire or Rapidshare? You may have already used them and downloaded many GBs of stuff. These websites offer something called “one-click file storage”. One-click file hosting is an internet based service that allows users to easily upload whatever they want, except copyrighted materials, from their hard drives or from another similar file hosting provider (called remote upload). This is usually free or very cheap.
These sites have many users utilising their services every day. So I thought it would be a great idea to explain these websites further for people who are curious to learn more. In this article I will explain some of the features of Mediafire and Rapidshare and compare them.
There are a few popular one-click file storage services, the market leader right now is Rapidshare. Rapidshare.com is a German one-click storage website operating from Sweden and financed by paid Premium members. They still offer a free service to non-premium users with some restrictions. A non-premium user cannot upload more than 100Mb of files. The user is then supplied with a URL where the file can be downloaded which allows anyone to download the uploader’s file.
Another popular one-click web hosting site Mediafire started up in 2006 and is located in Texas, USA. The domain Mediafire.com has received plenty of internet user’s attention in a short time because of its rather few limitations for non-premium users compared to similar service providers.

Mediafire vs. Rapidshare

Comparison of Traffic:

According to the Compete.com study, Mediafire gets 1 visitor for each 2 Rapidshare visitors. The figures are misleading though. Lets see how many links there are on the internet for each site.
Link Counts:
All the Mediafire links on the internet: 17.900.000
All the Rapidshare links on the internet: 140.000.000
According to Google search results Rapidshare has over 140 million incoming links on the internet although Mediafire only has approximately 18 million links. So why – according to Compete.com results – does Mediafire seem much more popular than the Google results suggest? As I mentioned before, Mediafire’s rather few limitations attracted many more downloaders than it would if it has the same restrictions as Rapidshare. Also, Rapidshare encourages their users to share more Rapid links with their point system.
Are you wondering why I searched “Mediafire.com/?”? Because all the download links from Mediafire.com are in the same format which starts with “Mediafire.com/?”. The same is also currently true for Rapidshare links, which start “rapidshare.com/files”. Of course, a forum/blog poster may link to the file with another name, or the same links may have been shared more than once. Also note that Google results are not constant, you might be reading this post a while after I wrote it. Ignore this for now thought because we are just making a comparison.
What is Rapidshare Point System?
Rapidshare started a service called Collector’s Zone. This Zone allows users to gain free membership and some gifts. The more your links are downloaded the more points you will gain. Users are able to gain 1 point for each successful download as long as the file is larger than 1MB and the downloader generated less then 5 points in the last hour. This system though has also caused some unusual uploading habits; Users started to make 100MB files to 120MB just to bump up their link count (from 1 to 2) and to upload files which are already available on the Rapidshare servers. Despite this Rapidshare didn’t give up their promotion system. By contrast Mediafire has no promotion system for their users and this has prevented file uploads from Mediafire fans who always use Mediafire to download their files for free.
Conclusion:
Each service provider has their own upsides and downsides. Mediafire has less restrictions for free users like allowing download accelerators (something which is very rare among similar web hosting providers). Rapidshare use collector’s zone to increase their available link count while focusing their attention improving the experience for Premium users.

Beware of huge fake Google Adsense income screenshots being posted in forums by bloggers. You will be surprised how easy it is to create a fake Adsense earnings screenshot without any photoshopping skills and mislead unsuspecting readers.

I had earlier shown you a fake screenshot from our Adsense account boasting our million dollar Adense earnings. Had it been a few hundred dollars, maybe you might have believed it.

This an example of how easy it is? to edit any web page live in your? web browser, and then easily capture a screenshot using Print Screen, or any other screen capturing software. We captured that screenshot using the free Snagit, courtesy a limited time promotion.

Now there is an even easier way using a free online tool called Google Adsense Generator which can roll out a real-looking, but fake Google Adsense earnings screenshot, with all identifying details blacked out,? based on the income you specify. Detecting and Preventing Content Plagiarism

How can you prevent and detect Content Plagiarism? Plagiarism is a serious issue in the blog world and it is a prime duty for all bloggers to prevent their content from getting copied and also take the corrective action when needed. Every blogger gets annoyed when some one copies their content and ranks higher than them in the search engines.

While it is highly unlikely to stop blog scrappers and splogs from emerging there are some simple measures that a blogger can do to tackle this effectively. As we always know prevention is better than cure and hence the first step is to take preventive steps which will make it hard for the scrappers to copy your content.

Prevent Plagiarism
1. Copyright Banners
Let everyone know that the content on your blog is copyright protected. The best way to show it is by displaying a copyright banner at a highly visible location in your blog. Adding a copyright symbol in the blog footer is also a good practice.

2. License your content
Some bloggers will not mind if their content is used partially by third parties provided they give proper credit. Creative Commons is the most common and established method to license your content. The license should clearly state the type and this will let people know how accommodating or restrictive you are with respect to your blog content. Visit the Creative Commons licenses page and choose the right one and display it in your blog home page.

3. Protect your RSS feed
A good percentage of the blog scrappers use RSS feeds to automatically copy the content and publish it elsewhere with the help of robots. One good way to let the world know that the content came from your blog is to add a copyright message to your RSS/ATOM feed. This can be automatically done with the help of the simple feed copyright wordpress plugin. The good thing about this plugin is that it will link back to your blog.

4. Provide Partial Feeds
One of the best methods to prevent feed scrapping is by providing a partial feed and making the reader to visit your blog to read the rest of the content. While this move will annoy a good number of your subscribers and even some of them might unsubscribe but it is a matter of choice.

5. Watermark your content
It is very common to find your images being stolen and a good way to prevent this is by watermarking them. This also applies to all other content like code snippets, videos etc which you publish in your blog. Picmarkr is a free online service which will allow you to add custom watermarks.

6. Prevent Image Hotlinking
Hotlinking is the act of directly linking to an image in your blog. This is not only a copyright infringement but it will also use up your bandwidth. This can be avoided by creating a .htacess file which will display an alternative image when someone links directly to non-html objects on your site. Here is a nice step-by-step guide to prevent image hotlinking with .htaccess.

7. Use the CopyRight Pro Plugin
If you are very particular about people copying content from your blog directly, the best way is to prevent selecting and right clicking. With the help of the WP- CopyRight Pro plugin you can disable text selection and right clicking on your wordpress blog.

Detect Plagiarism
Even after taking these preventive measures, scrappers will manage to copy your content in one way or the other. It is better to stay alert and detect on a regular basis to see if some one is copying your content.

8. Google Search/Alerts
The best and easy way is to use Google Search and find replicas of your content. To automate this process you can set Google alerts for some unique terms related to your blog. A major part of this task can be automated with the help of the digital finger print wordpress plugin which will set unique finger prints at the end of each post and hence makes it easy for detection.

9. Detection Services
There are some services like CopyScape which will show copied destinations that don’t come up in Google search. Unfortunately the free version of CopyScape has very limited features. An alternative option is Tynt which is a complete copy detection and attribution service. Tynt will also aid in increasing the visibility for your content and increases your traffic and search rankings with the automatic attribution link.

Plagiarism Action
Once you find that your content has been copied the next step is to take steps to remove the copied content from the web or claim copyright infringement and make money out of it.

10. Contact the blogger/webmaster
If you see that someone is using your content without your permission or without providing credit, there is a good chance that they might have used it without knowing the implications. It is better to send a courtesy mail asking them to provide a link back to the source or remove the content.

Look for the contact form or a contact email where you send the email.
Type the domain name in a who is lookup tool and it will show the name of the registrar and the contact information. Sometimes this information might be protected but you will still be able to find a contact email address.
Alternatively you can also contact the hosting company which hosts the site and file a report with them.
11. Send a Cease & Desist Message
Wikipedia says that “Cease and Desist (also called C & D) is an order or request to halt an activity, or else face legal action”

If the blogger or the webmaster fails to respond to the previous request the next step is to send a C & D. You can use this cease and desist template and draft your own copy with ease.

12. Ask for a compensation
Plagiarism and copyright infringement are illegal and if you are the creator of the original content you have all rights to ask for a monetary compensation. FairShare is a service which will help you to do this. You can also hire copyright infringement agents like CopyByte who will take all the monitoring on your behalf and also take the necessary legal action.

13. File a DMCA
The biggest trouble which a blog can get is to get removed from the index of the search engines. If the blogger fails to respond even after sending a formal request and a cease & desist message, you can go ahead and file a DMCA with Google and other search engines. Most of the search engines have an online form where you can formally submit a DMCA complaint by furnishing the necessary information to prove that your content has been copied.

If you are serious about your blog then it is necessary to take these preventive measures and do the right action when your content gets copied.

Missing or No Security Tab Found in Windows XP Professional

Security tab for the properties of files or folders in Windows XP Professional is the important functionality that enable administrators and users to define security permissions and rights for particular user or group to the computer resources. By default, Windows XP Professional follows recommended setting to enable the use of simple file sharing that hide the Security tab, leaving you with only General, Sharing, Web Sharing & Customize tabs as in the Simple File Sharing UI.

So to see and unhide the Security tab, just use the following steps:

Launch Windows Explorer or My Computer.
Click on the Tools at the menu bar, then click on Folder Options.
Click on View tab.
In the Advanced Settings section at the bottom of the list, uncheck and unselect (clear the tick) on the “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)” check box.
Click OK.
Security tab is available only to Administrator or users with administrative rights. So make sure you login as one. And security can only be set in an NTFS partition. If you’re still having problem to reveal or display the Security tab on files or folder properties, check out the following registry hack and set the value to 0 or simply delete the key:

It's still in the very early stages (aka. alpha release) but it's still worth giving it a look. It's got a pretty standard setup routine:

I tried it on a few files and it worked pretty well. Like they say it doesn't make the process completely automatic, but it might help.

As the quantity of information on the Internet continues to grow, so does the question of how to process it all and make it useful. A startup called 80legs, based in Houston, TX, is hoping that an inexpensive, distributed Web crawling service could help startups mine the Web for information without having to build the giant server farms used by major search engines. The company launched this week at DEMO, a conference in San Diego that showcases new companies.
Web crawlers, or spiders, are software that automatically visit pages on the Internet and can be used to index them and gather bits of information from different pages. Crawlers are used by search engines, for example, to monitor the location of information on the Web. But the scale of the Web means that comprehensive crawling consumes a lot of processing power, which typically means building huge data centers to power the software.
80legs hopes to make this technology more accessible to small companies and individuals by allowing leasing access and letting customers pay only for what they crawl.
Web crawling technology is also crucial for semantic sites and services designed to process natural-language queries. While 80legs expects to see users interested in search and semantic applications, CEO Shion Deysarkar says that those testing the service also included customers with less technical interests. Some market researchers, for example, use 80legs to uncover mentions of specific companies or topics across the Web.
A user can start a Web crawl through 80legs's Web-based interface. The form on the company's site lets them set parameters for the project and upload custom code needed to control how the crawler does its job. For example, a user might want the crawler to find images and check them against a database of copyrighted ones. Deysarkar says his company's crawlers are capable of processing up to two billion pages a day. The company charges $2 for every million pages crawled, plus a fee of three cents per hour of processing used.
Many startups struggle to find the funding needed to build large data centers, but that's not the approach 80legs took to construct its Web crawling infrastructure. The company instead runs its software on a distributed network of personal computers, much like the ones used for projects such as SETI@home. The distributed computing network is put together by Plura Processing, which rents it to 80legs. Plura gets computer users to supply unused processing power in exchange for access to games, donations to charities, and other rewards.
Deysarkar says the approach significantly reduces costs for 80legs, allowing the company to offer its service for far less than would be possible if it used a data center, or even a cloud-computing service such as Amazon Web Services.
Daniel Tunkelang, cofounder of the search company Endeca, based in Cambridge, MA, says that a good Web crawling service could be useful for startups that want to focus on building the search experience rather than on collecting the data. But Tunkelang says the success of 80legs may depend on how easy it is for users to customize the crawl. "The big question is, how adaptive and programmable is the crawl?" he says.
Tunkelang also notes that it's important for a Web crawler to capture as much information as possible. For example, the path a crawler took to arrive at a particular page can provide a search company with useful information about the contents of that page.
A service such as 80legs could also be useful for university researchers. "Crawling at large scale is indeed an expensive hurdle to cross for experimental search projects in academia, which often are lacking large-scale infrastructure," says Kevin Chang, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Chang thinks the distributed nature of 80legs is "an interesting direction and sounds promising [for lowering] the cost of crawling." At the same time, he agrees that a lot depends on how efficiently the system operates and how effectively users can customize what data they want to process.
80legs plans to launch a market where nontechnical users will be able to purchase applications that can control how a crawler functions. Partner companies will also be able to sell access to applications that control 80legs's crawlers.

Tracking Devious Phishing Websites

Researchers are monitoring a trick that makes it harder to track and shut down fraudulent websites.

In the world of online fraud, as in real life, the longer miscreants can operate without being caught, the more money they stand to make. And experts have discovered that many phishers--crooks who use fake websites to trick users into giving up valuable personal information--have found a trick that makes it harder for the good guys to block or shut them down.
The trick, dubbed "flux," allows a fake site to change its address on the Internet very quickly, making it hard for defenders to block these sites or warn unsuspecting users. According to research recently published in the journal IEEE Security and Privacy, about 10 percent of phishing sites are using flux to hide themselves.
Flux makes use of the Internet's domain name system, which is responsible for matching a Web address typed into a browser with the server that actually hosts a site. When a user tries to visit a Web page, the domain name system first directs the user to a name server, which maintains an up-to-date list of site addresses. This name server then tells the user's browser where to find the desired site.

Normally, only a small number of machines host copies of a site--just enough to keep it going if something goes wrong. Fraudulent sites, however, are a different story. Phishing sites are often hosted through botnets--thousands of hijacked machines distributed across the globe.

"These machines don't belong to the miscreants, they belong to you and I and our grandmothers," says Minaxi Gupta, an assistant professor of computer science at Indiana University who was involved with the research. Because phishers have access to so many machines, she explains, they can use all of them to move a site around rapidly, throwing defenders off the scent while keeping the website available.

To use flux, a phisher needs to control a domain name, which gives him the right to control its name server. The phisher then sets the name server so that it directs each new visitor to a different set of machines, cycling quickly through the thousands of addresses available within the botnet. Gupta notes that flux is most effective when the phisher shifts the location of the name server as well. If the name server is also moving to different locations on the Internet, it's doubly hard for defenders to pinpoint a central location where the fake website can be shut down. Gupta's group found that 83 percent of phishing sites that used flux this way lasted more than a day before being blocked, compared with a 65 percent survival rate for sites that didn't use flux.
The group also identifies methods for detecting flux and suggests that flux detection should be built into the domain name system itself. Since using the technique likely means a site is fraudulent, the system itself could help protect unsuspecting users from visiting these sites.

Shortening detection time by even a few hours can make a significant difference, says Alper Caglayan, president of Milcord, a company based in Waltham, MA, that collects real-time data about botnets. "If they can operate even a day, they've already made too much money," he adds.

Caglayan notes that there are some legitimate ways to use flux--for example, to deliver multimedia content efficiently--but says that the way a botnet uses flux should look different. For example, a botnet's machines are scattered around the world in a pattern that wouldn't make sense for a legitimate business.
Some experts believe that a multipronged approach is needed to stop phishing sites. Caglayan's company provides a service that helps Internet service providers and other large network administrators find and shut down infected machines within their networks.

Some Web browsers also use blacklists to warn users away from fraudulent sites. But tricks like flux make it almost impossible for those blacklists to stay current enough to be useful. Caglayan expects that, in the future, browsers will need to build in systems that can detect fraud on their own.

Detecting flux will only help people who are using blocking services of some kind, says Manoj Srivastava, chief technical officer of Cyveillance, a security company based in Arlington, VA. "To effectively deal with an attack involving fast flux, it is necessary to take the domain off the Internet, and that requires working with either the registrar or registry of that domain," he says. This can be hard because some domains are located in countries with loose regulations for Internet fraud. Simpler obstacles such as a language barrier can also leave a fraudulent site in operation for a longer period of time.

Gupta says that, as with most Internet crime, flux is a just one component in a larger game of cat and mouse. "You can't win this game," she says. "You just have to continually detect their means and adjust to them."

Internet set for change with non-English addresses

The Internet is set to undergo one of the biggest changes in its four-decade history with the expected approval this week of international

domain names - or addresses - that can be written in languages other than English, an official said on Monday.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN - the non-profit group that oversees domain names - is holding a meeting this week in Seoul. Domain names are the monikers behind every Web site, e-mail address and Twitter post, such as ``.com'' and other suffixes.

One of the key issues to be taken up by ICANN's board at this week's gathering is whether to allow for the first time entire Internet addresses to be in scripts that are not based on Latin letters. That could potentially open up the Web to more people around the world as addresses could be in characters as diverse as Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Greek, Hindi and Cyrillic - in which Russian is written.

``This is the biggest change technically to the Internet since it was invented 40 years ago,'' Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of the ICANN board, told reporters, calling it a ``fantastically complicated technical feature.'' He said he expects the board to grant approval on Friday, the conference's final day.

The Internet's roots are traced to experiments at a US university in 1969 but it wasn't until the early 1990s that its use began expanding beyond academia and research institutions to the public.

Rod Beckstrom, ICANN's new president and CEO, said that if the change is approved, ICANN would begin accepting applications for non-English domain names and that the first entries into the system would likely come sometime in mid 2010.

Enabling the change, Thrush said, is the creation of a translation system that allows multiple scripts to be converted to the right address.

``We're confident that it works because we've been testing it now for a couple of years,'' he said. ``And so we're really ready to start rolling it out.'' Of the 1.6 billion Internet users worldwide, Beckstrom - a former chief of U.S. cybersecurity - said that more than half use languages that have scripts based on alphabets other than Latin.

``So this change is very much necessary for not only half the world's Internet users today, but more than half of probably the future users as the use of the Internet continues to spread,'' he said. Beckstrom, in earlier remarks to conference participants, recalled that many people had said just three to five years ago that using non-Latin scripts for domain names would be impossible to achieve.

Google's cost to acquire new subscribers is also falling and its marketshare for Web search grew in September while Yahoo's did not, Barron's wrote.

"What would you pay, then, for a company that's cutting expenses to the bone and producing only 'less bad' results? You certainly wouldn't want to pay what Yahoo! is fetching," Barron's wrote.

Yahoo! has closed GeoCities, a free Web hosting service that it purchased for over three billion dollars at the height of the dot-com
boom.

"We have enjoyed hosting websites created by Yahoo! users all over the world, and we're proud of the community you've built," the California-based Internet pioneer said in a message at the GeoCities website. "However, we have decided to focus on helping our customers explore and build relationships online in other ways."

Yahoo! said GeoCities would not be available after yesterday and recommended GeoCities refugees set up new online homes at its paid Web hosting service, with an introductory offer of just five dollars for the first 12 months.

The closure of GeoCities comes a week after Yahoo! reported that aggressive cost-cutting helped it more than triple its net profit despite a 12-per cent decline in revenue in its third quarter.

Yahoo! said net profit soared more than 244 per cent in the quarter to 186 million dollars, or 13 cents per share, from 54 million dollars, or four cents per share, a year ago, easily surpassing analysts' forecasts.

The better-than-expected performance was due in large part to cost-cutting measures implemented by Carol Bartz since being named in January to replace Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang as chief executive.

Social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn raise "serious new challenges" for financial regulators, the head of the largest US

independent securities regulator said on Tuesday.

Wall Street bankers and analysts increasingly want to use social networking to connect and interact with customers, Richard Ketchum, the chief executive of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) said.

But as these sites are currently designed they may not allow firms to keep the kind of archives of their employees' business communications required by regulators, Ketchum told industry group Securities Industry and Financial Markets Assocation's (SIFMA) annual meeting.

"We continue to witness the advent of technologies that will challenge your ability to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements," Ketchum told the bankers and dealers. "Social networking is one such innovation."

Most firms prohibit their employees from using sites like Facebook for business, partly because of the difficulties they pose for firms' ability to meet supervision and record-keeping requirements, Ketchum said. "Nevertheless, interest in these sites is inevitable and will not go unabated," he said.

FINRA has set up a task force comprised of industry representatives "to explore how regulation can embrace technology advancements in ways that can improve the flow of information between firms and their customers without compromising investor protection," he said.

Google marches deeper into telecom turf

Google on Tuesday made it more tempting for people to try its nascent Voice service that lets users merge home, office and mobile phone into a single number.

People can keep their current mobile telephone numbers and "still get many of Google Voice's features," product managers Craig Walker, Vincent Paquet, and Pierre Lebeau said in the blog post.

Previously, it was required to switch to a "Google number" to get Voice services. Those that switch to Google numbers get a richer array of features, including cheap international calling and merging home, office, and mobile telephones.

"We know not everyone wants to switch to a new phone number," Walker, Paquet, and Lebeau said in the post.

"So, it made sense to create a lighter version of Google Voice for people who are willing to trade some features for the ability to use their existing numbers."

Google Voice can take voicemail messages, playing them back on demand or converting them into transcripts delivered by email or SMS.

Voice is in an invitation-only test mode in the United States. Invitations can be requested online at services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/.

"Google Voice is about giving you more control over your communications," Walker, Paquet, and Lebeau said. "We hope this new option makes it easier for you to manage your messages and personalize your voicemail experience."

Disney launching iPhone, iPod touch applications

Walt Disney Co is launching free iPhone and iPod touch applications, giving fans access to Disney content and interactive features

Disney.com, part of the Disney Interactive Media Group, said it will offer users of the popular Apple Inc devices items like the new "Click2Life" feature that lets fans take pictures of images from the Disney.com Web site, and eventually in the physical world, and unlock exclusive content.

For instance, a teenager may one day see a poster of an upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" film in a mall, snap a picture of the poster with an iPhone and then generate video content related to that picture or character.

Jason Davis, vice president of Disney.com, said in an interview that the media giant realized it already had a huge audience of iPhone and iPod touch users for its content on its existing mobile application on Disney.com.

Disney.com reaches nearly 31 million unique visitors per month and said that among mobile Web sites, it ranks as the No. 1 entertainment mobile site.

It also has an expanding lineup of many paid applications currently available in Apple's App Store including Toy Story Mania!, Disney Fairies Fly, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Breakspin.

"Our iPhone and iPod touch traffic is heavily made up of kids and moms. The iPod touch has a very specific demographic geared to the tween," he said, adding that within Disney content, there are various safety controls.

"Because the applications are self-contained, once you're in the application, you can't get into anything else," he said.

The new application organizes Disney-branded content within one destination on each device, lets users interact with Disney characters through customizable photo frames and audio greetings, listen to Radio Disney live, watch music videos and buy Disney music on Apple's iTunes Store.

Intel, HCL launch first WiMax-enabled nettops

The world’s largest chip maker Intel, along with HCL Infosystems, on Tuesday announced the launch of the first of WiMax-enabled nettops

and laptops in the country.

WiMax Broadband rollout will help consumers access internet in remote parts and congested places, where wireline broadband has failed to reach. Unveiling the nettops and laptops, Intel CEO and president Paul Otellini said internet access should become a fundamental right as it’s a real indicator of economic growth.

“A 0.1% increase in broadband penetration will create almost 300,000 jobs in India, according to our estimates,” he said. Nettops are small form of laptops, which consume less power and are used primarily for accessing the internet.

State-run telco BSNL said it would start rolling out WiMax services in about 1,000 blocks in the country by next month. India currently has about 6 million broadband connections. But the government has set itself an ambitious target to achieve 20 million connections by next year.

“The government is committed to provide all panchayats with rural broadband in next three years. But the private sector should work towards lowering the cost of access device,” minister of state for IT and communications Sachin Pilot said.

HCL Infosystems will make available the WiMax-enabled laptops and nettops within three months to the consumers. The laptops will be powered by Intel’s Atom processor. “The cost of the devices will be a bit higher than conventional laptops, as it includes the WiMax access device,” added HCL Infosystems chairman and CEO Ajai Chowdhry.

WiMax is a wireless technology which can allow mobile broadband access with speeds as high as 10 mbps. It is especially useful for far flung and rural areas areas, where last mile connectivity has not reached as yet.

In fact, I read it not once but three times. Tanenbaum fills over 700 pages with everything I didn't know, or better still, only thought I knew about networks.

One might wish for more information on setting up services (such as Samba under Linux, which isn't covered), but you'll likely want to buy at least one other book dedicated to the operating system you choose, and that book should cover services in detail.

This book derives a lot of its value from the fact that Hallberg isn't shy about sharing his opinions. For example, he comes out against managing your own modem farm (and in favor of access via the open Internet) in most situations, citing the considerable nuisance aspect of such work and the appeal of Internet Service Provider (ISPs) technical support resources. The procedural information in this book is strong as well, but most readers will especially like the general wisdom the author shares. His approach to administration decisions is to describe his thought process, in which he identifies the relevant issues, weighs the importance of each, and investigates the suitability of competing solutions to the problem. He also uses sidebars to great effect, answering small but important questions ("What's a thread?") concisely and accurately.

Computer Forensics: Computer Crime Scene Investigation explains how to gather evidence of computer crimes in such a way that it will be more likely to lead to a conviction in a criminal court. Will Bing bang out google?

Looks like Microsoft's Bing is going to give Google a run for its money. Looking at the past month's data, one can conclude that Bing is getting better that the previous month. While google itself is busy challenging Microsoft in its traditional software market, MS seems to be getting better and causing worries to Google and Yahoo. With Microsoft stocks ending up slightly higher and Google's going down marginally, it seems to be a pointer to the shifting tectonic plates in the software and search engine industry.

MS now has a little more than 12 % of the US search market share for May compared to Google's 65%. So its not near yet. Some analysts say that the initial euphoria over a new product launch may also have led to these figures and Bing's popularity will stabilize(read fall) in the next few months.
